On the Road with the Internet of Everything

How cars will merge into our connected lifestyles

It’s been a buzzword for years, now. The ever-illusive Internet of Things is coming soon and it’s going to streamline our lives by intelligently connecting all the devices on us, around us and, yes, even in us. It will automatically arrange everything from cooking our dinners to monitoring grandpa’s heart implant. This is what is commonly referred to as a smart or connected home, but what about our cars?

That’s the Internet of Cars or the Internet of Things and Cars or more simply the Internet of Everything. Indeed, a car is a device, albeit a very expensive one, and it operates in an even more data-rich environment than our smartphones and ovens.

A driver’s ecosystem presents a variety of both internal (car temperature, motor conditions, driver alertness) and external data (weather, traffic, road conditions). Indeed, cars themselves automatically operate a number of processes that can be constantly monitored and optimized. We hear claims every day about how, before long, our cars will drive themselves down digitally connected highways that will automatically alert us to traffic conditions, closed roads and accidents. Last, but certainly not least, connecting our cars with other devices and the broader mobile ecosystem means that our cars will converge seamlessly into our digital lifestyles.

Our cars are already teeming with digital technology, including systems for navigation, hands-free mobile communication, infotainment, usage-based insurance, stability control and anti-lock braking, but we are still at the dawn of the connected car. Automotive makers are eyeing systems for automatic braking, night vision and active safety systems controlled by interactive data analysis.

Safety First

Safety is clearly the topmost concern for a car driver. Telematics devices such as the Octo one already provide drivers with advanced information and safety features such as traffic alerts, stolen vehicle tracking and recovery and emergency calls, but the future clearly lies in full connectivity, especially amongst vehicles and between vehicles and emergency centres.

In the near future, drivers will receive real-time, intelligent traffic forecasts and road and weather alerts. Cars will automatically sense and react to safety data, while remote vehicle diagnostics will ensure greater vehicle maintenance and preventive safety alerts and measures.

Embedded vs. Mobile

As the automotive industry gears up for this connected future, one of the main issues that continues to rage is whether cars will embed their own telematics devices – sending, receiving and interacting directly with data – or whether our vehicles will interact with the ubiquitous smartphone app.

Octo, as we have seen, provides its own telematics device and services to insurers and policyholders, but it is also developing smartphone apps.

Carmakers clearly prefer the embedded device option, although it presents one fundamental issue: cost. Who will pay for the installation of telematics devices and Wi-Fi modems in cars: the factory or the client? Nor do the issues stop here. What about software updates? What happens if something goes wrong, will this affect the carmaker’s reputation? And what about data privacy? Cyber attacks?

Smartphones represent a viable and efficient alternative. First of all, the smartphone industry is already up and running. Smartphones are virtually in every driver’s pocket and there is a huge developer ecosystem available to create new applications, not to mention the large number of apps that have already been tried and tested and that are used day in and out by drivers around the globe. A further significant aspect to consider is that a third-party app would divert any problem or issue from the carmaker to the application developer.

This debate over embedded (in-car device) vs. mobile devices (smartphone) continues to brew. Indeed, the consensus among experts and industry leaders at the recent Telematics USA 2014 Conference was that, at present, a hybrid approach seems to be the only viable solution.

Where do we go from here?

A further variable is represented by consumer demand. A survey conducted by Gartner (Q1, 2014) indicates that most drivers currently seek basic services (traffic information, map updates, weather and news updates, parking information and Internet radio), but that there also is a growing demand for further value-added services, especially by the younger tech-savvy generation.

In fact, speaking at the Insurance Telematics Update 2014 Conference, Nino Tarantino, CEO, OCTO Telematics North America, urged insurers that the time had come to incorporate value-added services into their usage-based insurance packages. “In order to differentiate a telematics product and provide true value to customers, insurers must offer packages including a wider range of value-added services,” he underlined. And the same definitely holds true for the car industry.

Carmakers, in the meantime, are also thinking ahead: from diagnostics to prognostics. Vehicle smart systems can forecast where a driver is headed based on the time and the day or interact directly with a digital calendar. Intelligent systems employ predictive-user experience to suggest alternative routes or provide greater comfort, for example, by automatically heating cars. Even more importantly, data collection from telematics devices means that the intelligent system can alert drivers of impending problems, ranging from motor issues to tire consumption, before the car breaks down on a highway or is involved in an accident.

Clearly, the future will be based on the reception, transmission and analysis of individual vehicle data confronted with enormous amounts of real-time information and archived data on driver preferences, habits and driving styles.

Octo, a pioneer in insurance telematics, has already archived data and insight. Octo’s data centre currently stores driver behavioural data for over 241 billion kilometres.*

Conclusion

Today, we still face a clear divide – even a generational gap – between consumer expectations and the reality of automotive telematics, but there is no doubt that vehicles and roads will merge into our connected, digital lifestyles and into the Internet of Everything. It’s just a question of time.

We will have fewer issues with our cars and issues will create fewer hassles in terms of time, cost and safety. We will use our cars to move around, communicate and interact, and just like our smartphones, cars will provide us with a seamless digital experience.

Octo UK Eyes Mass-Market

Martin Williams, Octo UK: ‘Insurance telematics is ripe for the mass market’.

The falling cost of digital devices is uncovering new opportunities for insurance telematics to attract a vaster segment than its traditional core segment, composed mostly of young tech-savvy drivers. Indeed, just last week, Octo CMO Jonathan Hewett, speaking at the Insurance Telematics USA Conference, declared that insurance companies must make the most of the current opportunity to drive usage-based insurance beyond its traditional core segment and towards true mass-market uptake.

“The decreasing cost of devices and fees is continuing to drive the cost of insurance premiums down,” explains Martin Williams, Managing Director, Octo Telematics UK. “Young drivers clearly face higher premiums and this makes it more affordable to include and operate a telematics device; however, as costs continue to decrease, an entire new range of segments is opening up to insurance telematics.”

Indeed, data released by the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) at the beginning of the year (2014) indicates that sales of telematics insurance policies have increased by 60% over the past eighteen months with nearly 300,000 policies sold in in the United Kingdom in 2013.

Thanks to its partnership with Insurethebox, the United Kingdom’s leading telematics insurance company – with which Octo has recently extended its existing partnership – over 300,000 Octo Black Boxes have been installed in UK policyholder vehicles since 2010.

Insurethebox focuses on the quality of back-end data for the analysis of crash and claims services. In fact, although it currently does not include a mobile app, the Octo device comes equipped with an external accelerometer, which provides far better data quality in these contexts,” emphasises Mr Williams.

The value added services that are often bundled with insurance telematics will not only provide improved safety and security services for policyholders, but they also will mean lower custom-tailored premiums. Moreover, this also means that drivers will have the opportunity to reap all of the advantages associated with the Internet of Things, connect with the broader mobile ecosystem and converge with the now ubiquitous digital lifestyle.

Octo and Zurich Spain Sign Agreement

Provide Spanish drivers with premium and custom-tailored car insurance policies

Octo and Zurich Insurance Spain undersigned an agreement in July 2014 to provide Spanish drivers with premium and custom-tailored car insurance policies.

The agreement between Octo and Zurich Insurance entails the installation of an Octo telematics device on vehicles covered by Zurich Insurance policies that will monitor car location, time of travel and usage. The objective is to predict driver behaviour, to assess actual risk levels and adjust or customize insurance policy premiums on the basis of these parameters.

In 2013, for example, 80% of fatal accidents in Europe occurred on conventional roads, compared to 5% on motorways and 15% on highways. Thus, policyholders travelling on safer high capacity roads, which witness fewer accidents than lower capacity roads, will be able to enjoy discounts on their insurance renewals.

Moreover, Octo on-board telematics devices provide a series of other value-added, technology-based advantages, especially security.

Safety, in fact, is something that the vast majority of Europeans (92.8%) expect from their cars. “In addition to saving money, our telematics solutions enable drivers to travel in a safer manner thanks to automatic emergency-call and geo-location services,” explains Davide De Sanctis, Octo Country Manager, Spain and Portugal.

If a vehicle impact is detected, the device automatically sends a distress signal to the company that contacts the customer immediately. If the driver does not respond, emergency services are immediately alerted.

Octo has been installing this type of device on cars and other vehicles since 2012. Indeed, Octo continuously stores and processes over 72,000 data points per minute* to perfect its road safety understanding. Real-time monitoring of quantitative data (where, how and how much the car is used) and qualitative monitoring (driving speed, braking, acceleration, cornering…) enable Octo to provide transparent policies and custom-tailor prices to individual drivers.

According to estimates, the integrated e-Call device, which will be mandatory on all new cars and trucks produced in the EU from 2015, could save nearly 1500 lives per year (5% of the total number of deaths in road accidents in Europe) and reduce serious injuries cases by 6% annually.

Moreover, in case of car breakdown or theft, Octo’s geo-location services make it easier for assistance services to locate the car or for the police to recover stolen vehicles.

Octo Telematics provides telematics solutions for Car & Away’s New London Gatwick Airport carsharing scheme

Octo continues to empower the sharing economy through individualised and real-time insurance monitoring

Car & Away will use Octo subsidiary Omoove’s groundbreaking P2P car- and ride-sharing technology to power its Gatwick airport service

London, 14th March, 2018: Octo Telematics (Octo), the number one global provider of telematics for the auto insurance industry, has announced that its innovative telematics devices and big data analytics will be used to power the insurance for Car & Away’s new Gatwick Airport car-sharing scheme. The base technology for the scheme will draw upon Octo subsidiary Omoove’s car- and ride-sharing platform to provide services to holidaymakers parking at Gatwick.

Car & Away is a new peer-to-peer car-sharing platform that allows vehicle owners to rent out their car whilst they are away on holiday. Holidaymakers flying from the airport will be able to earn while on holiday as their cars are rented to other drivers. This means that they will still have the convenience of driving to the airport and will be able to offset some or all of the often-expensive long-term airport parking fees. In some cases, drivers may even be able to make a profit from

short-term vehicle rentals, earning an extra dinner while abroad or paying for a tour or excursion to make the most of their time away.

Consumers are firmly embracing the sharing economy through apps and services such as AirBnB and Octo subsidiary Omoove, which allows drivers to create car and ridesharing communities to pool vehicles and earn from unused assets. In terms of revenues, peer-to-peer transportation is the UK’s biggest sharing economy sector, with over a third of UK platform revenues. However, for consumers to be able to lend their cars with confidence, they must be reassured that they will not be liable for any incidents while they’re on their holidays. They must also have trust in both the service, and the community, which is provided by Octo’s telematics services and data analytics.

Drivers registering for the Car & Away scheme will temporarily install an Octo device and will receive a temporary usage-based insurance (UBI) policy. The car’s usage will be monitored from driving out of the car park to its return, clearly establishing any liability in case of an accident, as well as measuring safe driving behavior and any wear and tear caused by poor driving. Car & Away can monitor driving behavior and enable insurers to provide the best value cover and assistance in the event of any emergency. The box will be easily removed and the policy canceled as soon as the car is returned. The car will also be cleaned inside and out, ready for the owners to return.

Jonathan Hewett, Chief Marketing Officer, Octo Telematics said: “Canny consumers are always looking for the best ways to save money. We shop around for the best holiday packages and

Car & Away represents one more way to achieve a lower-cost vacation. However, making sure that your car is properly insured remains a top priority. The evolution of insurance from insuring the vehicle to insuring individuals is driving the car-sharing economy. Telematics already means that each driver is given a premium based on their own, unique ‘driver DNA’ and this technology is empowering innovation such as Car & Away. A carefree holiday need not be ruined by endless wrangling over liability in the event of an unfortunate accident while you’re away. Octo’s advanced data-gathering and analysis means you can hand over your keys in complete confidence that everyone is protected.”

Edwin Colella, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Omoove said: “We are happy to be able to continue to play a role in the ongoing development of the sharing economy and to contribute to the implementation of this car-sharing solution with such an innovative start up. We are happy that Car & Away recognized the value of Omoove’s service and ability to provide a ready-to-use technology, as well as the security for owners and users that Octo’s telematics solutions provide.”

Andy Hibbert, Car & Away Founder & CEO said: “We’re all getting used to, and comfortable with, the sharing economy, especially with the advent of services such as Airbnb. So, sharing a car while people go away isn’t such a big step. Especially when owners not only make money out of it, but benefit from dropping the car right next to the terminal and receiving a professional cleaning service. Having Octo telematics installed in every car provides a much greater level of assurance to our community of owners and renters. This clever device provides key insights to our insurers meaning they can provide the best value cover and peace of mind so owners can enjoy their holiday whilst their car is earning and renters can enjoy an amazing rental experience from the great range of cars available. Early customer feedback is showing us time and time again that when it comes to renting cars, together with our partners, we provide a service where everyone wins.”

Car & Away launched at Gatwick Airport in November 2017 and is available to the general public who are looking to park at London Gatwick South Terminal for 6 days or more. To register, please visit www.gatwickparking.com.
