Our history


Fabio Sbianchi founded Octo in 2002 to provide telematics to the motor insurance industry.

Fabio saw that the way insurance quotes are typically calculated, against a set of static metrics, didn’t represent an accurate risk profile for drivers; with no way of rewarding good drivers and helping all motorists become safer on the road.

By introducing telematics to the industry, Octo has helped auto insurers to accurately calculate risk and manage and pay claims based on data analysis; making insurance pricing fairer and more transparent for drivers.

Today, Octo has grown into the leading global insurance telematics provider, with more than 100 partners and 5.6 million connected users worldwide.

Our roots in behavioral, contextual and driving data analysis allow us to deliver analytics and connected car solutions to the automotive industry as well as the large rental and fleet sectors.

In July 2019, Octo completed the process of appointing a new leadership team by designating its new CEO, Nicola Veratelli. Fabio Sbianchi will continue to contribute to the company’s growth from his position as a Member of the Board.

Nicola Veratelli

Group Chief Executive Officer

Nicola Veratelli is Chief Executive Officer at Octo, the leading global insurance telematics provider, delivering analytics and connected car solutions to the automotive industry as well as to the large car rental and fleet sectors.

Prior to joining Octo, Nicola Veratelli served as Senior Vice President Operations & Supply Chain Hertz International, based in London.

A manager with a wide international background, having worked in multinational companies mostly abroad, Nicola has demonstrated remarkably versatile change management skills.

He is an inspiring manager across his areas of responsibility and a thought-leader in the areas of quality, profitability, and efficiency. He will continue to move the company from a compliance-based system to a performance-based system.

Nicola’s past experiences include Rio Tinto Alcan, Eaton Corporation, Basell, GlaxoSmithKline.

He is a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.

Giuseppe Zuco

Chief Mobility Executive Officer (Co-Founder)

Giuseppe Zuco is the Chief Mobility Executive Officer at our Group and until 2015, he was the Chief Information Officer, a post he held since joining Octo S.p.A. as a co-founder in 2002. Mr. Zuco graduated from the Sapienza University of Rome with a degree in Physics in 1996. From 1985 to 1996, Mr. Zuco consulted for Telettra S.p.A. Mr. Zuco worked at Viasat S.p.A from 1995 to 2002, where he was in charge of Research and Development of Viasat Terminals.

Gianfranco Giannella

Chief Operating Officer / General Manager

Gianfranco Giannella is the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of our Group and has been with Octo since 2013. Mr. Giannella started his career in 1990 in Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) after obtaining his degree in Business Administration. He left Andersen Consulting as senior manager in 1999 and moved to DMR Consiel where he worked as Executive Senior Advisor. He then joined IBM in 2001, first as Principal in the Strategy practice of IBM Consulting and then as Executive Partner for Telecommunication industry. He is a master deal maker educated at Insead, Fontainbleau.

Chief Revenue Officer

David T. O’Malley joined Octo in 2017 as Chief Revenue Officer. As a Global Enterprise Technology and Business Information Services Executive Leader, O’Malley has 29 years experience creating value through organizational transformations, balancing top line revenue, and long term profitability and shareholder value. O’Malley’s diverse experience as a Fortune 50 division President, Managing Director, Senior Vice President, several Chief Revenue Officer roles,Top 100 FI solution sales, business process outsourcing, strategic planning, financial control, Chapter 11 reorganization and corporate financial services has contributed to his invaluable experience in software, business information services and related platform and infrastructure technologies.

Geoff Werner

Chief Global Marketplace & Analytics Officer

Geoff Werner has over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, where he has specialized in pricing and product management. Werner joined Octo in 2017 as Group Vice President DriveAbility and Consulting following 7 years at Willis Towers Watson where he was the Global Telematics Product Leader. Prior to Willis Towers Watson, Geoff held a variety of positions at two top 10 US insurance companies and started his own consulting firm which he ultimately sold to Willis Towers Watson. Throughout his career, Werner has focused on the implementation of new products and processes leveraging innovation, including: developing and managing the DriveAbility product to provide telematics scoring services for participating insurers, implementing new rating and tiering plans using new analytical techniques, improving management information processes and assisting companies analyze and respond to legislative changes. Werner is a leading expert in pricing as evidenced by the fact that he co-authored the textbook that the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) uses to teach ratemaking to all actuaries.

Carla Cianfriglia

Chief Human Resources & Organization Officer

Carla Cianfriglia has served as Group Chief HR & Organization Officer for our Group since 2013. Ms.Cianfriglia graduated in 1993 from the Sapienza University of Rome with a degree in Economics. She started her career in 1994 as a financial advisor in Audit and M&A at Reconta Ernst & Young S.p.A. and she joined Pfizer Italia Srl in 1998. Subsequently, she received her Executive MBA from INSEAD in 2002 and a Masters in Micro and Macro Organization, People Management, Labor and Union Law from University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2006. From 2007 to 2008, she worked in HR Organization and Change Management at AstraZeneca Italia. Subsequently, from 2008 to 2013, she was Head of Learning, Development & HR Governance at Barclays Bank plc. Ms. Cianfriglia also taught courses in Organization, People Management and Labor Law at the University Tor Vergata in Rome from 2007 to 2011.

Laura Brambilla

Group Chief Financial Officer

Laura Brambilla has a long international experience within leading multinational telecommunications and engineering Companies. Prior to joining Octo, she held the position of CFO EMIA of AECON, a leader in the engineering sector, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Laura Graduated from the Catholic University of Milan in 1998 with a degree in Economics. She began her professional career at Alcatel Italia, where she held a brilliant career until 2016. After an appointment as head of the Treasury, in 2006 she became Business Management Director and stayed within this role until 2010 covering also the whole Mediterranean area. Simultaneously, she was also named Integration Program Leader during the merger process between Alcatel and Lucent. Then, in 2010, she was appointed CFO for Italy, and then for the Mediterranean Region, the Western Region and finally EMEA.

Nunzio Calì

Group Chief Technology Officer

Nunzio Calì comes from a long career in the field of Information Technology, with 15 years of experience in the Fiat Group, where he was CIO Fiat Powertrain Technologies and CIO Fiat Group Purchasing to then take on the role of Deputy CIO Fiat Group Automobiles. Prior to his appointment in Octo, Nunzio Calì was CTO & CIO (Deputy General Manager) for AlmavivA SpA, a leading Italian company operating globally in information technology and outsourcing services, realizing some of the most important programs of Digital Transformation for large Italian companies both in the public and private sectors. Simultaneously, he was also General Manager of ADT (Almaviva Digitaltech), a company founded in Naples in 2017 to support the AlmavivA Group in the development of digital solutions.

Chief Product Portfolio and Ecosystem Officer

Gionata Tedeschi joined Octo Group in 2018 as Chief Product Portfolio and Ecosystem Officer. Over the years from 1990 to 2017 Mr. Tedeschi supported global organizations (including automotive, banking, insurance, media, retail and utilities) in their digital value-creation strategies and their transformation journeys. During his career he has workedat McKinsey, Dun&Bradstreet and Accenture, and has been Founder - acting as Manging Director/or President - of 3 companies: Affinion Italy (previously CIMS), Born4shop-Saldi Privati and Buongiorno (B2B division). Gionata Tedeschi after graduating cum laude in 1987 at Bocconi University, has spent most of his professional career across Italy, UK, France and Israel.

Alessio Calisti

Chief Customer Success Officer

Alessio Calisti joined Octo in May 2018. He spent his up-to-now career serving Customer value in Telcos, Media, Retail and Technology Companies. In Telecom Italia since 1995, then, from 1999, partecipating to Infostrada start-up and later on in Wind, working for Wholesale and Top&Large Customer Commercial Area; in 2002 he turned to Consumer market arena acquiring significant experience in Customer Experience Transformation, Customer Base Marketing and Customer Operations activities. From 2008 to 2012 he started up Mediaset Premium, building the Company from zero to 2 million customers as responsible for the entire Customer lifcycle in terms of operations and value generation. In 2013-2014, as a Senior Advisor of Long Term Partners, he was the project leader of a huge transformation project in Ferrero Germany, joining Poste Italiane in 2014 to lead the Group Customer Centricity transformation project and then as Director of Customer Experience.
